System Administrators at UNBC

Systems administration at UNBC is typical of many small universities:

• We employ six systems administrators although one position is currently vacant.
• The six positions are all defined within a three tiered structure
• Sys Admin I - 80% operational, 20% minor projects.
• Sys Admin II - 40% operational, 60% projects.
• Sys Admin III - 20% operational, 80% projects.
• The division between the tiers is very blurry as we have Sys Admin I’s that are easily operating at a Sys Admin II level.
• Each sys admin has a primary focus on either Windows or Unix operating systems although all sys admins are expected to be literate in both styles of operating systems.
• We support the backend infrastructure for many services including:
• Banner.
• Oracle and SQL Server databases.
• Campus SAN storage.
• File Services.
• Mail (Exchange and Unix/IMAP).
• Web Services.
• Terminal Services.
• Backup/Recovery .
• Disaster Recovery/ Business Continuity.
• We also operate as tier 3 support.

Sys admins work as part of the Infrastructure Services group which also contains Networks and Telecommunications. There are 12 full-time employees in this group. The Infrastructure Services group is part of Information and Technology Services (ITS).
